Perception
Different people have different perceptions at looking at
things such as how they would create a user interface and how they would design
a user interface and what colours they would use within the user interface.

Shapes
Geons are 2D shapes that are uses to make shapes /images
visible and allows people to identify the shape from any angle. They cost less
and are easier to create than 3D images. 3D shapes may easily be misidentified
due to the perception of the viewer, for example, the person looking at the
shape may look at things from a different view than others which may lead to
them thinking that the shape is something else rather than what it actually is.
Gross 3D Shapes are used in games and are cheap to produce and they transmit in
real time so that when you move around on the game it allows you to see the
shape in 3D.
Colour
One of the most important when you design HCI is the colours
that you use. When companies such as Microsoft create software they use colours
that don’t distract your attention while writing a Word Document or any other
software that they create. If you use bright colours such as red and black they
will distract the user which will then may be slow down how fast the user will
be able to work while creating a Word Document. Also colours are important for
people who may be colour blind or may have dyslexia.
There are three main colours which are Red, Blue and Green.
These three colours can mix themselves together to create any colour that is visible
in the spectrum. Using high contrast colours together such as white and black
allows the end user or anyone to see anything clearly on the screen.
Pattern
When the end users hear the word pattern they may think that
it means the layout of the GUI but when it may actually mean the template such
as how everything is laid out such as when you click the save button where will
the box appear on your screen and where the buttons are within that box.
Throughout Microsoft’s different software creations most of them have a
consistency layout which is better for the end users because they will feel
more comfortable while using the software that is created by Microsoft.
The pattern of the user interface will make users more
confident while using the software as they will already be familiar with the
software package.
Objects
The user interface is created by using all different types
of objects. For example if you are using Microsoft Word and you click the “Save
As” button, another object would appear on your screen which will then allow
you to choose where the document is saved and what you want to name it. The
user interface must also fit the screen resolution so that everything can be
seen at one time.
